This evening I have been thinking of a post that I wrote last year titled September 11 Birthday.
Last year I wrote about Carl Zeiss who was born 198 years ago on September 11.
In the post I mentioned that I had pictures of the house that his parents lived in when he was born.
Tonight I found the pictures so thought I would share them along with some other pictures from Weimar.
Here is the sign that is on the house. Carl Zeiss was born on September 11, 1816 and died on December 3, 1888.
I am not sure if I was correct in saying that this is the house where his parents lived when he was born. The translation of “verlebte in diesem haus sein jugend” is “spent his youth in this house”. I can at least say that this was his boyhood home.
Here is the full view of the house. You can see the sign in the middle of the building just below the third row of windows.
The bottom floor of the building houses a little cafe with outdoor seating. You can see the umbrellas and the advertisements for dessert in this picture.
The pictures do not have much detail as they were taken with my old Sony digital camera that used diskettes for storage. I have some good memories from that camera.
The pictures were taken in 2000 during my first trip to Germany. As I looked through some of the other pictures that I took in Weimar I came across this one. This was a sign on a house that showed that Franz Liszt lived in it from 1869 to 1886.
This made me wonder if Franz Liszt and Carl Zeiss both lived in Weimar at the same time.
I found that Franz Liszt moved to Weimar in 1848. Carl Zeiss opened his first workshop in nearby Jena in 1846, so they just missed living in Weimar at the same time.
I am curious as to whether Liszt and Zeiss ever met. I will have to do some research, but my thought is that they would have.
Here is a statue of Franz Liszt that is in a park in Weimar. He looks quite impressive.
Liszt taught piano to several hundred students while living in Weimar. Many of them became well known composers, pianists or conductors.
Now to listen to some music by Liszt before heading to bed 🙂
