Iowa 50 Years From Now?

Don’t let the title deceive you. I am not going to predict what Iowa will be like 50 years from now.

I will leave the predicting to editorial cartoonist Frank Andrea Miller who penned this cartoon 55 years ago. Another treasure from my Grandma’s Scrapbooks.

Iowa 50 Years from Now?

I am a few years late on reviewing his predictions. They would have looked a bit silly then, and still are today.

So, let’s look at each one of them.

I’m going to get one of those new helicopter corn pickers.

Well, Iowa is the tall corn state, but they still don’t need a helicopter to pick corn. They would however be amazed at the advancements in farm equipment. The technology has really changed in 50+ years.

The Governor needs a new Rocket-Car but we can’t spend over $85,000.

We don’t have rocket cars yet, but he might have got close to the price of a car for a Governor. Then again, maybe he was predicting that the Governor’s SUV would get pulled over for speeding in 2013.

Congratulations Evy on your 26th trip to the Rose Bowl!

Coach Forest Evashevski had just taken the Iowa Hawkeys to two Rose Bowl games and won both of them. He retired after the 1960 season, so didn’t make it to 26 Rose Bowl games.

Coach Hayden Fry later took the Hawkeys to three more Rose Bowl games.

This map shows how Iowa will figure in the new Federal Super Duper Super Highway System.

I had to laugh at this one a bit. The illustration did make me think of the Iowa Interstates.Iowa Interstate map - Interstate Routes - I-35 - I-80 - I-380 - I-29

I-35 does run almost straight up the middle of Iowa and I-80 runs straight across. However, you also have I-29 on the western edge of the state and I-380 in the eastern part.

I hope you enjoyed this humorous look at an old editorial cartoon.
