Tonight I was looking through one of my Grandma’s scrapbooks and a picture of a Homecoming Float caught my eye. This is the time of year when many schools have their Homecoming games.
The picture brought back memories of when I was in High School. Each year we would decorate a float and try to win the honor for best float.
The junior class float shown above won the honor for the 1961 Hamburg High School Homecoming parade.
The Junior High classes also participated in the parade and had a nice float with football players on it.
The floats are not as elaborate as those for the Popcorn Festival that I shared earlier this year.
In the Homecoming game the Hamburg Wildcats played the Malvern Orioles. I am not sure who won the game as I can’t find an article about the game. However, Hamburg went 7-1-1 in 1961 and I know that the tie was with Sydney. There is a good chance that they won the game.
Of course one of the highlights of a Homecoming game is the announcement of the Homecoming King and Queen at halftime.
This was the year before the game that the Old Football Program that I shared last month was from. Many of the players from that game would have played in this one.
We had a Captain and Queen instead of King and Queen at the school I graduated from. I remembered who they were and just checked to make sure.
Do you remember who the Homecoming King and Queen were in your senior year?
Steven

Hah, no I don’t remember that. But how does Captain fit with Queen? Just wondering . . .
Captain of the Football team.
Fun old photo’s you’ve found there, 61 was a good year 😉 ha! They didn’t do a Homecoming event in my high school and I don’t think it’s typical in Canada. There are football teams in high schools but it’s not as big a thing as in the states, probably because by Nov, there’s snow and bloody cold to sit outside in football arena’s.
