Today was a rainy day in Mexico City. I had checked the forecast and found that this will be a very common occurrence over the next two weeks.
Today, it made it easier to stay inside and work. I spent the day reviewing presentations for my class this week and doing some research.
Yesterday, I mentioned that this is a holiday weekend in Mexico. The major part of the celebration is on the evening of September 15 and September 16 is the actual Día de la Independencia de México.
Tonight it is much quieter than it was last night.
It is still very colorful though as many of the holiday lights are still lit. I know the picture above is all blurry and you can’t really tell much about what it is. However, as you are driving down the street this is what you see in your peripheral vision. There are many green, white and red light displays in honor of Mexico.
One of the front desk attendants at the hotel even had tri-color eye shadow in the colors of the flag of Mexico.
So, did I have some more great Mexican food this evening?
The picture above tells the story. We did not have Mexican food.
We went to a brand new mall near the hotel and almost all the restaurants were American chain restaurants. Even though I live in California, I have never been to a California Pizza Kitchen, so we decided to try it. I was not going to choose Olive Garden.
It was nice that they have a dedicated menu for Mexico that has items that are more in line with the Mexican palate.
To start I had a nice sopa de tallarines con pollo. The chicken noodle soup was very good. I always like to have chicken soup in Mexico. However, I usually like it better with just the chicken and broth and whatever spices they put in it.
For an appetizer we also had the Chipolte Cheddar Spudz. These little bites of goodness are filled with a creamy cheddar chipolte potato mix and served with a nice spicy dipping sauce. My colleague is on a diet which only meant more for me.
For my main dish I had a Meat Cravers Pizza. The description in the menu sounds much better than if I would try and translate it. Salchicha Italiana, salsa marinara, jamón Capicola picante, salami, pepperoni, lomo Canadiense y queso Mozzarella.
The crust on the pizza was really nice. It was so thin that with the amount of toppings I needed to eat most of the pizza with a knife and fork. At least enough so that I could pick up a slice without everything falling off 🙂
The dinner tonight reminded me of the pizza I had during my last trip at Pizzas Palace.
What is your favorite kind of pizza?
Steven

Don’t really care for pizza, but that looks good.
When traveling I tend to skip the chain restaurants and instead eat at places that feature local foods.
Hey, I’m from Idaho, and I thought we had a trademark on the word “spud.” Imagine finding “spudz” in Mexico!
