Home Pride Update XXVII – Nature’s Own

While on vacation last week visiting family in the Midwest I had the chance to try one of the Nature’s Own varieties from Flowers Foods. There is an interesting story behind this, so you should first check out my last Home Pride Update.

I have also been keeping my eye on the news to see if I can find out anything news about the return of the major Hostess bread brands including Home Pride Bread. Unfortunately, there is nothing new again this week.

However, I did see a couple news articles that pointed to a July 15 return of Twinkies which means in less than a month you can satiate your cravings for them.

Last week I had the chance to try several breads that are not available in California. I tried several different types of bread from Rotella’s Italian Bakery of Omaha, Nebraska. They were all good and I can see why it is a local favorite.

I also got to try bread from Flowers Foods. My brother brought me a loaf from Missouri.

I was initially disappointed with Nature’s Own Butterbread. It was not what I was expecting. To me it was equivalent to your basic store brand and not a premium bread.

A couple nights later I went grocery shopping with my sister and when we were loading the groceries into the trunk of my brother’s car I noticed a loaf of bread from HyVee tucked away in the trunk. I didn’t think much of it, but the morning after my brother left the loaf of HyVee bread was sitting on the counter and I could tell that there was something significant about this loaf of bread. Everyone had sheepish grins on their faces as they watched me get ready to prepare my morning toast.

I opened the loaf of bread and discovered that the bread in the package was what I expected from Nature’s Own Butterbread. My brother had played a trick on me and switched the wrappers of the two loaves of bread. This was the loaf of Butterbread.

I popped a couple slices into the toaster. The results were definitely much better than the HyVee bread and more what I expected.

It was really good with butter and some jam from Canada that my sister had.

I also had more of the bread at lunch with a sandwich and it was also good. I won’t add this bread to the list of breads that have passed the test yet, as it is not available to me here in California. However, when it is available it will be near the top of my list. There are also a few more varieties of bread from Nature’s Own that I would like to try.

See Home Pride Update XXV for the latest results.

I was excited to try this bread as it is distributed by Flowers Foods who bought the major Hostess bread brands including Home Pride Bread. Nature’s Own is their flagship brand, so I am hoping that it will soon be available in their new distribution regions in California.

Hopefully regulatory approval for the purchase of Home Pride Bread will come soon for Flowers foods and I won’t have to worry about trying new breads. I can go back to my delicious Home Pride Bread. Will it live up to my memories?

MMmmmm bread. I’m actually cutting back to one slice of toast for breakfast as I want to lose a couple of pounds. I hope the new bakers of Home Pride Bread keep the same recipe or you’ll have to look forever

I live in Ohio, so Nature’s Own is available to me; unfortunately I hadn’t found it until a few months ago, as I’ve been trying different breads here and there as well.

The Butterbread you mentioned is what we had gotten most recently, and I definitely love it for sandwich-making (which is almost exclusively what I need my bread for). I’ve gotten other types of Nature’s Own and they are quite good as well. I still want my Home Pride, but NO will suffice until that day. 🙂
