Alcatraz Island

A quick post tonight as I have been caught up in some genealogy research and lost track of time as usual.

I decided to take a quick look through a folder of pictures to see what would catch my eye.

Here are the pictures that quickly captured my eye. Since the folder is sorted alphabetically, they were near the top.

Alcatraz Island - The Rock - Alcatraz Prison - Star Trek into Darkness - Sunset - San Francisco Bay

Here is a beautiful sunset picture of Alcatraz Island. In this picture you can see the main cell house of the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in the background, with Building 64 in the foreground and the Water Tower and Power House to the right. I like the way that they are silhouetted against the sunset and how the water reflects off of the waves.

These pictures caught my eye as I saw a view of Alcatraz Island in a movie on Sunday afternoon. I will not give any of the plot away, but Alcatraz shows up in one of the scenes near the very end of Star Trek Into Darkness. Of course, we all know that Starfleet’s headquarters is in San Francisco.

Alcatraz Island - Building 64 - Cell Block - Star Trek Into Darkness - San Francisco Bay

Here is a closer picture of Building 64 which was used as barracks when the island was used as a military prison. Of course the main cell block looms behind the building. This is also where the ferry docks when you visit Alcatraz Island.

Alcatraz Power House - Golden Gate Bridge - Sunset on San Francisco Bay

I really like this picture of the Power House that is on the north end of the island. Especially as the sun is setting and you have a nice view of the entrance to the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Only one tower of the bridge is visible, but it looks majestic against the sunset.

You may see these pictures again if I get around to writing another post about Alcatraz Island. There are some interesting things I would like to share, but I don’t have time to write about them tonight. Plus, I need to do more research :-).

  1. Those are beautiful photos. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and I’ve seen MANY photos of the island. If you haven’t been to Alcatraz you should before some idiot burns it to the ground.

I haven’t got to see the movie yet, but I’m on pins and needles for the weekend. So thanks for the heads up, I’ll watch for it.

The pictures bring back wonderful memories (Is wonderful the right word to use when describing a prison tour?) of when I visited Alcatraz.
