Remember When?

Another busy Wednesday and time to search for a few pictures to post. Not sure exactly why these pictures caught my eye, but here we go.

What does this door open onto?

Outhouse - Three Holer - Remember When?

I took this picture at a small ranch near Patterson. This is one of the outbuildings close to the house.

Outhouse - Privy - Two holer - Sanitation - Patterson, CaliforniaWhat do we have here? Is it a rubbish bin? If you are young you might not have experienced using these special holes. This picture brings back many memories of using outhouses or privies when I was a kid. I remember the privy at my Grandparent’s house on Bluff Road near Hamburg, Iowa and the ones at the little country church building in Frytown, Iowa. There are others I remember as well, but these stand out in my memories. I especially remember the smell.

However, I really don’t remember many privies that were two-holers. But wait……

Three Hole Outhouse - Privy - Sanitation - Remember When

This one is actually a three-holer.

Where are the stall dividers?

Where is the handle to flush?

Where do you hang the roll of toilet paper?

I am also remembering the lyrics to Everything’s Up to Date in Kansas City from the musical Oklahoma!

With ev’ry kid o’ comfort ev’ry house is all complete.

You can walk to privies in the rain and never wet your feet!

I played a cowboy in Oklahoma during High School and know this song well as it was one of the songs that I got to sing.

I am thankful that I didn’t grow up in a house without indoor plumbing. However, I can imagine that large families were thankful for a three-holer, especially when it was cold, and you really had to go :-).

I guess I should have looked up some of the other names. Biffy is an interesting one.

  3. My grandmother actually grew up on a farm that had an outhouse. She hated when they had to clean them out–something I’m told the adults frequently made children do…Makes you happy to be alive in times such as these, now doesn’t it. I’ve actually never heard of multiple hole outhouses, lol. My grandmother told me once that she liked to take comics and clothes magazines and paste them to the walls so there was something to look at. LOL!!!
