I have been busy doing some genealogy research this evening and almost let the evening slip away without a post. I decided to take a quick look through a folder of pictures to see if something caught my eye.
Two pictures of the Singapore Flyer caught my eye this evening.
This shot was taken from the Singapore River while I was on a Duck Tour of Singapore. This picture was taken on August 2nd in 2008. The Singapore Flyer opened in early 2008 and originally rotated counter-clockwise when viewed from the marina. Two days after I took this picture the rotation of the wheel was switched so that it rotates clockwise.
When the Singapore Flyer went into operation it became the worlds tallest Ferris wheel at 541 feet tall. Previously the Star of Nanchang at 525 feet was the tallest from 2006 to 2008 and from 200o to 2006 the London Eye at 443 feet tall was the tallest. There have been multiple proposals for taller Ferris wheels since 2008, but none have been completed. Eventually one will knock the Singapore Flyer from the top of the list, but for now it is the tallest. I did see the London Eye when it was the tallest, so maybe I should post some pictures of it sometime :-).
Here is another view of the Singapore Flyer from a different angle. This is taken from the marina side. In front of the Singapore Flyer is a large floating stage that was being readied for a large celebration. What I really like about this picture though is the ferry boat in the Marina Bay.
This large Ferris wheel brings back memories from Boy Scouts. For one of our Boy Scout contests we built a Ferris wheel entirely out of wooden spars and rope. The only metal that we used was for the axle. We won the prize and returned the next year with a merry-go-round and won again :-). I learned a lot about pioneering, which is using spars and lashings to create structures. Also, a lot about team work as we had to work together to build the structures. Erecting the structures was often the most difficult task.
I hope you enjoyed the pictures and my quick wander down memory lane.

Looks like quite a ride, Steven!
Whew, this looks scary. Run-of-the mill ferris wheels frighten me a little–and I can’t even picture what it must be like to ride this one. Did people go backwards when the wheel went counter-clockwise?
