Another week has gone by and still nothing new in the news about Flowers Foods and Home Pride Bread.
I am sure that they are patiently waiting for regulatory approval and that they will then start to communicate their plans.
I have also been watching for news about the other Hostess bread brands. I figure that if news comes out about them, that the news report may also give information about the others.
I am sure that you not only find this page while looking for Home Pride bread, but also when looking for other Hostess bread brands. Tonight, I decided that I would put together a quick list of the bread brands and where they ended up.
Of course, I am most interested in the bread brands that went to Flowers Foods.
- Home Pride
- Wonder
- Nature’s Pride
- Merita
- Butternut
Grupo Bimbo ended up with one bread brand even though Flowers Foods was the Stalking Horse bidder.
- Beefsteak
United States Bakeries picked up some of the smaller regional bread brands.
- Sweetheart
- Eddy’s
- Standish Farms
- Grandma Emilie’s
Now to a review of the bread that I am trying this week. This week I have been trying out Rainbo Butter Top Wheat.
This loaf of bread has the look and feel of Home Pride Wheat from the outside of the package, but once you open it you can start to see the differences. The bread has a more uniform grain and the slices are not quite as thick. It is also a bit darker in color.
The taste is good though, although it does not live up to the memory of Home Pride Bread. In fact I sometimes wonder it Home Pride Bread will live up to it’s memories once it returns to the shelves :-).
The bread toasts well, although I needed to change the setting because of the thinner slices. It also makes a good sandwich and has good taste with just a nice coating of butter for a midnight snack.
This is now the third week in a row that I have tried a Rainbo brand bread, and this brand is definitely the best overall so far. Roman Meal is also up there, but falls a bit short. I will leave both brands in the front runner category for now.
I also found a local source for the bread, so this may be what I buy next time I need a loaf. For now I have enough bread left for the week.
The front runners are now Rainbo Butter Top Wheat, Rainbo Wheat Bread , Roman Meal Sungrain 100% Whole Wheat and Roman Meal Thin Sliced Sandwich Bread.
The breads that have not passed the test are Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat , Safeway’s Butter Top Wheat, Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat, Oven Joy, Sara Lee Honey Wheat, Bimbo Soft Wheat Family, Cascade Pride Split Top Wheat , Oroweat simply 100% Whole Wheat, Open Nature 100% Whole Wheat Bread and Rainbo White Bread.
You can click on the bread names above to visit the posts where I reviewed them.
Hopefully more details about Home Pride Bread will be released soon.
