Santa Catarina

Tonight I will share a few pictures from the Coyoacan area. At lunch today we walked to a restaurant in the Santa Catarina neighborhood.

We ate at the Meson Atigua st Catarina. I of course took pictures of my food, but decided not to share them tonight. After all this is not really a food blog. I did have some wonderful soup and some so-so beef with some wonderful guacamole.

The restaurant was across the square from this beautiful old church building.

Capilla de Santa Catarina - Coyoacan - 16th Century Spanish Church Building - Bell Tower

This is the Capilla de Santa Catarina. Parts of the building date from the 1520’s, but the main structure and tower date from the mid 17th century. We did not have time to go inside, but there are murals inside that are 400 years old.

The square is very picturesque and there have been several movies filmed there over the years. In fact, they were filming either a movie or soap opera episode while we were there.

Just off the square, there is also this beautiful old building.

I really like the faded colors of this building and the way that it presents itself to the corner of the streets. It is so inviting.

Now for a bit of color.

I really like the colors in this building. The beautiful contrast between the orange and blue with the stately old tree in front providing some interesting shadows and selective obscuration of the building.

I really like the shapes of trees and their silhouettes, but sometimes shadows are just as fun.

I really like the shadow of the tree on this wall, then the live tree above it.

We have been working long hours so far this week. We have left the office after seven each night. Tonight my regular host had to stay even later so one of my other students was pressed into service. He took me to one of his favorite restaurants, La Buena Fe. We started off with a nice ceviche de pulpo which is made with octopus. We then had our main course of prime rib tacos and I finished off the meal with some nice vanilla ice cream.

The decor in the restaurant was fantastic. I think I got a few nice pictures which I may share later, but for now I will just share the one that was my favorite.

This great mural caught my eye as we were leaving. The table and chair are real, but the rest is a painting. Can you imagine sitting at this table? One of the neat things about the area here is all the interesting art.

I hope you enjoyed this little look into my day.

Steven
