I checked to see what the latest news was this week about Home Pride Bread and found that the press has been very quiet. However, this week we will see some news as the auction date for the major Hostess bread brands is on Thursday. We will then know whether Flowers Foods, the Stalking Horse bidder, will prevail and win the auction.
If you are waiting to hear about Twinkies, Ho-Hos, Ding Dongs, Drake’s Cakes and the other Hostess Brands, you will have to wait until the auction on March 13.
After the auction on February 28 there will be another court hearing to approve the final bids, so the sale of Home Pride Bread will not have approval until the first week of March.
Look for a post later this week to see how the auction turned out.
Now on to the temporary replacement quest. Last week I was not too sure whether I would try another bread or not. However, when I went shopping in the middle of the week I found another bread to try. See my post Bread and Snow for more details.
This week I have been trying King’s Hawaiian – Original Hawaiian Sweet Sliced Bread. This bread is a sweet bread and is also a bit thicker than normal. Makes me think of a sweet Texas Toast. I decided to try this one for fun, knowing that it would probably not be the replacement bread.
I really like the sweet taste of the bread when toasted. It does have a really good taste. The texture is really nice and soft and it seems to melt in your mouth just a bit :-). However, this really does not fill the requirement of being a multi-purpose everyday bread that Home Pride was. I cannot even imagine using this bread for a tuna salad sandwich. The sweetness of the bread would just not work. Probably would not work for most sliced meats either, but would probably make a good PBJ. I do know that it tastes wonderful when toasted and spread with Jiff’s Chocolate Hazelnut spread.
I am not going to add this bread to the list of breads that have not passed the test. I am just going to leave you with my thoughts about it. I may even make it an occasional purchase for yummy toast 🙂
After this week the current front-runners are still Oven Joy from Safeway, Roman Meal Sungrain 100% Whole Wheat and Roman Meal Thin Sliced Sandwich Bread.
The breads that have not passed the test are Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat , Safeway’s Butter Top Wheat, Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat, Sara Lee Honey Wheat, Bimbo Soft Wheat Family, Cascade Pride Split Top Wheat and Oroweat simply 100% Whole Wheat.
You can click on the bread names above to visit the posts where I reviewed them.
This week I bought another loaf of Roman Meal Thin Sliced Sandwich Bread.
I am not entirely ready to proclaim a victor in the quest for a replacement bread, but decided that it was time to go back and try the top candidates again. Also, I will be traveling a lot in the next month so the loaf of bread that I bought today may even last me until we know when Home Pride will be back on the shelves. I am hoping that Flowers Foods will release details of their distribution plans soon after the auction is over.
Stay tuned for the next update when we will know for certain who the auction winner will be.
Steven

You’ll have to have a celebration if you ever get your Home Pride Bread back. You can make mini Jiff’s sandwiches and serve Champange 😉
