This week the last auctions for the Hostess Brands were approved. The first auction is the one I am most interested in as it includes Home Pride Bread.
Here are the auction dates:
February 28 – Five bread brands including Home Pride Bread and Wonder Bread
March 13 – Twinkies, Ho-Hos, Ding Dongs, Drake’s Cakes and more bread brands
Of course, we have seen who the Stalking Horse bidders are for each brand. It is now up to them to defend their bids. After the auctions there will be another court hearing to approve the final bids.
So, has my quest for the temporary replacement for Home Pride bread ended?
First lets look at the bread that I tried this week. This week I tried out Oroweat simply 100% Whole Wheat.
I would say that this one was better than the last Oroweat loaf that I tried, but it did not stand out from the other brands that I have tried. It does have a good taste and texture, but at this point of the quest it is being relegated to the discard shelf. I will repeat what I said about the bread from last week. If this was what was left on the shelf at the end of a busy shopping day at the grocery store, I would not be disappointed that I would have to use it for a week, but it would not be my first choice.
Therefore, this bread gets added to the list of breads that have not passed the test.
After this week the current front-runners are Oven Joy from Safeway, Roman Meal Sungrain 100% Whole Wheat and Roman Meal Thin Sliced Sandwich Bread.
The breads that have not passed the test are Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat , Safeway’s Butter Top Wheat, Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat, Sara Lee Honey Wheat, Bimbo Soft Wheat Family, Cascade Pride Split Top Wheat and Oroweat simply 100% Whole Wheat.
You can click on the bread names above to visit the posts where I reviewed them.
I have not yet decided whether I will pick up another new bread. I still have a bit of bread left for the next couple of days. I am contemplating going back and giving the front-runners a second round of tests. I also have a couple trips that will help fill the time spent waiting for the resumption of Home Pride Bread production.
It will all depend on my next trip to the grocery store. If I see another promising bread I may give it a chance.
Check back next week to find out what my decision was.
Steven
