Yesterday we got some important news about the future of Home Pride Bread.
Many different news sites have announced that the bankruptcy court has approved the bidding process for the Hostess bread brands.
For those of you who have been wanting to know when Home Pride Bread will be available again, they also announced the date for the auction. The auction will be held on February 28. If you have been following the news, you will know that Flowers Foods will be the first bidder in the auction. For more about the auction process, look at: Home Pride Update V
There were also indications in the news reports that we will soon be hearing about who the Stalking Horse Bidders for the rest of the Hostess brands like Twinkies, Ho Ho’s, etc. will be.
Roman Meal Sungrain 100% Whole Wheat was the bread that I tried out this week.
I really liked this bread. It had a full rich taste and did not dry out too much when toasted. The size of the slice was a bit smaller, so it did not make as good of a sandwich bread. Also, the richness of the taste changed the dynamic of the sandwich that I tried this one with. Can a bread have too much taste? This was also a small loaf, so really doesn’t meet the challenge of lasting for a full week. I actually used less bread this week to make it stretch all the way through. Maybe that is a good thing :-). This will definitely be a bread that I would buy for special purposes, but will probably not make the cut as a general purpose daily bread.
After this week the current front-runners are Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat , Oven Joy from Safeway and Roman Meal Sungrain 100% Whole Wheat.
The breads that have not passed the test are Safeway’s Butter Top Wheat, Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat, Sara Lee Honey Wheat and Bimbo Soft Wheat Family.
You can click on the bread names above to visit the posts where I reviewed them.
I mentioned last week that I had my eye on a different loaf of Roman Meal Bread. I was not exactly correct on the name of it :-). Today I was able to buy a loaf of Roman Meal Thin Sliced Sandwich Bread.
When I picked up the loaf of bread I started to have memories of when I was a teenager and this was the bread that we used. I remember coming home from school and making sandwiches and also Sunday afternoon lunches on the road where we would have a bag full of sandwiches made with Roman Meal bread.
I also decided that since I really liked the bread for this last week that I had to try another Roman Meal bread.
Check back next week to find out how this bread fares against my tests. We will also probably know who the Stalking Horse Bidder is for some of the other Hostess brands also.
Steven

Thanks for sharing your research. I’m too lazy to do it. Am eager to hear about twinkes.
I remember Roman Meal too! It was a good bread. We currently use Nature’s Own Whole Grains. The kids like them. I hope to be able to start making our own bread once we get the B&B going. I use to make it when I had time, but with working my current job and getting the B&B open, who has the time 😉
I’ve heard this bread gives you funny hair do’s…ha! I’ve never seen those brands here but it’s 1:22am and I’m now really wanting some toast…..with peanut butter….urrgg, note to self, do not read about food at bed time.
Love your updates and crossing my fingers for a quick return of Home Pride. Nothing compares!
I have been reading your “Home Pride” updates periodically and agree that while *nothing* is quite the same as Home Pride, the Sara Lee bread offers one of the better alternatives. Also found Nature’s Own “Honey Wheat” at Sam’s Club. Went back through your blog and don’t believe you’ve tried that one yet. The brand is owned by the Hostess breads stalking horse Flower Foods. Bread slices are about the same size as Home Pride; a good sandwich size. Nature’s Own also has a “100% Whole Wheat” which has the slightly smaller slices you found with the other Sara Lee wheat bread.
John, I live out of the distribution zone for Nature’s Own. Will probably be in their distribution zone if Flowers successfully acquires Home Pride. They will probably introduce their other brands in their new territory as well.

When will be able to buy Roman Meal again? We look every time we go to the market. It is the best and we don’t want any other variation of bread.
