News is starting to flow about the future sale of the different Hostess brands, including Home Pride bread.
From the different news items that I have read in the past day it looks as if the different business groups and brand names will be sold off separately. In bankruptcy court Friday it was said that they are narrowing down the bids for the brands and also physical resources such as bakeries, equipment and truck fleets. I have seen some big names mentioned as possible buyers, but will wait to see who will float to the top before mentioning them here. I am just hoping that the bread brands will be sold to a supplier and not a retailer. I don’t want to have to go to a specific store to buy my Home Pride bread.
Perhaps by March we will have some of our favorite brands back again :-).
So now for the update on my quest for the temporary replacement for Home Pride.
First we had my initial post: Not My Bread!!
The first candidate was Safeway’s Butter Top Wheat.
I covered this candidate in Home Pride Update.
Then came Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat.
This was a good candidate and is the current front runner, see the details in Home Pride Update II.
This week’s candidate was Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat.
I was a little disappointed with this loaf of bread. The bread was a little lacking in flavor and also tended to dry out to much when toasted. Something tough to overcome if it is used to make toast each morning. For sandwiches it was pretty good. I am not sure why, but it was also harder to spread butter on the toast. The bread didn’t seem to grip the butter properly. It was a bit frustrating.
I thought about ending my search and just going back to the Sara Lee bread, but decided to try a few more loafs. It is always good to have more than one backup bread. When I was at Safeway earlier this week I browsed through the different types of bread and my eye was caught by this one.
Oven Joy is another one of Safeway’s store brands. I like the look and feel of the bread and decided that it would be the next candidate. I will let you know how this one stacks up to the other ones. I also have my eye on another Sara Lee variety, but will keep you all in suspense as to which one.

Now for an interesting question. Which former Hostess product would you stand in line for once they are being produced again? Would it be Twinkies, Ho-Hos or Home Pride bread?

Definitely Twinkies and the bread 🙂
The bread hands down. I had a stash in the freezer and just ate the last of it today….not realizing it was a Hostess product *cries*. I went ahead and bought the WalMart knock-off since a lot of their products taste just as good as the name brands but haven’t tried it yet. What is this world coming to…..
