Hmm, I just couldn’t resist this title. No I am not getting Halloween and Christmas mixed up. Early last week I wrote a post about Frightful’s Mountain.
The post covered the first three books of the My Side of the Mountain series by Jean Craighead George. In the post I mentioned that the fourth and fifth books of the series were picture books. So, here are the Frightful picture books.
The books were just a little bit too large for my scanner, so the author’s name is missing at the top. I wanted to show the illustrators name on one of the books. Both of the books are illustrated by Daniel San Souci. The illustrations are fabulous and really enhance the short story by the author. In Frightful’s Daughter we follow the early life of Oksi, the daughter of Frightful the falcon who was the star of the previous book. We see some of the same themes in this book as in the previous book as we find out more about peregrine falcons. We also see Sam Gribley again in this book as he helps Oksi survive the winter.
I picked this book up at the library, but the last one of the series was not available in our system. Last week I was at the book store and found a nice used copy so went ahead and purchased it. I am still looking for a copy of On the Far Side of the Mountain and will also keep an eye out for the book above.
In this last book of the series, Frightful’s Daughter Meets the Baron Weasel, we follow the adventures of Oksi and her eyases or babies. We also get to meet the Baron Weasel again, who was one of my favorite characters in the first two books of the series. The Baron Weasel tries to capture the eyases several different ways, but as always our falcon heroes prevail in the end. We also see Sam Gribley and Jesse Coon James again in the story. A great ending to a great series by Jean Craighead George.
I have a couple more books by George on my reading list. Including the Newberry Medal winner Julie of the Wolves.
