Time for another update on my search for a temporary replacement for Home Pride Bread. I will first cover the candidate from last week and introduce the next one. I will then give an update on Hostess selling their brand names and recipes.
Last week in Home Pride Update I covered my experience with Safeway Butter Top Wheat. This bread was definitely not the choice, so I revealed the next candidate.
This week I tried out a loaf of Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat.
I did like this bread and it will make a good temporary replacement if needed, but it is not the same. I did like that it was a soft bread and that it had good flavor. It also stayed fresh the whole week, but then again I ate it quicker than the Safeway bread.
What I didn’t like was that the bread was a little bit larger in surface area and also that it had less slices than other loaves of bread. I usually buy my bread once a week and I usually have a few slices left at the end of the week. This did not happen this week.
I could have just bought another loaf of Sara Lee today, but I decided that I should also give Oroweat a chance for a tryout.
This loaf of bread looks promising. It is slightly longer and has more slices than Sara Lee so should pass the test of having enough bread for the week. It is also a soft bread. At least the name gives it that claim :-). Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat. How will it taste? I have friends who use Oroweat and give it a good recommendation.
My Mother recommended Nature’s Own 100% Whole Wheat, but they do not sell it here. Home Pride will hopefully be back by the time they make an appearance in our market.
So, how is the process of selling the Hostess brands going? When will we have Twinkies, Ho Ho’s and Home Pride bread again?
A Bloomberg report released this week states that Hostess has received bids for their assets from multiple companies. The brands will most likely be out for bid in January and we may see new stock of our favorite treats and bread showing up in stores several months later. I will be keeping my eye on the news.
Do any of you have another suggestion for a bread to try?
Steven

This blog is quickly becoming my best bread source! Are the loaves different lengths or are the slices different widths?
The loaf is longer so there are more slices. I believe that the slices are the same width.
I practically live on bread and could well do so in a pinch. I’m really grooving on the nutty taste of pumpernickel right now. Toasted and buttered with apple jelly…Kind of a nutty and sweet together….?? Maybe you’d like it? It’s great for the panini press too or just lunch with mayo, lettuce and tomatoe….it’s really the perfect loaf for any occasion. LOL

I used to enjoy Home Pride. Maybe it is the butter that makes the difference. I am currently trying out Sarah Lee 100% whole wheat. Taste is so bad. No chance of buying it again.
