Baking Bread

All this talk about Hostess and the fact that my Home Pride bread will no longer be available has made me thing of an old book that I have.

The book is Stories about Sally by Eleanor Thomas, and is full of pictures of Sally’s surroundings. It covers a range of subjects of what goes on behind the scenes. Where does food come from, different types of transportation, how are we protected, the mail system and many more subjects. With a quick search I found that it was part of a series of Social Studies text books.

The book has a copyright date of 1949, so I thought we would take a trip back more than 60 years and see how bread was made then. I will let the book give us the tour.Stories about Sally - How Bread is Made - 1949

I just couldn’t get this book out of my mind and I decided to search my shelves for it. I actually found it pretty easy as I had an idea of where I last saw it :-). Don’t be surprised if you see more pictures from this book in the future.

I wonder how much the process has changed since this time. I do know that it is probably computerized now, but the basic flow and type of equipment is probably the same.

This book is also nostalgic for me in another way. Inside the front cover is a stamp from the school where I went to Kindergarten and First Grade. The book may have come from a book sale after the school was closed down and we all went to a brand new school. Maybe my mother will remember where we got the book.

p.s. Sorry about the pages being a little tilted and the shadows on the spine side. I didn’t want to stress the spine of my book. Sixty year old spines are not too flexible and are a bit fragile :-).

Steven, I totally enjoyed this article. We bake bread or rolls occasionally and is interesting to see it done professionally. Yesterday we bought Little Debbies version of twinkies, called Cloud Cake and I think they’re better. Debbie used to have a horse ranch about 10 miles from us.
