Last month I wrote a post titled Old-Time Photography.
I titled the picture that was the focus of the post: Cousins Playing Poker
Cousins Playing Poker
The picture was taken in Coin, Iowa and reminded me of the Old-Time Photography pictures that people stage today wearing period dress.
When I wrote the post last month, I didn’t realize that I also had another picture that was taken the same day.

Now to the participants in the picture. My Great Grandmother Lottie Cochran Van Duzor is standing on the left. Sitting next to her is my Great Grandfather Charles (Chub) Van Duzor. Next are her brothers, Lorenzo ‘Dow ‘ and Earl Cochran. Standing in the back with the white blouse is her sister Georgia Cochran. On the right end are Harve and Fred Ramsey who are cousins of Lottie.
Poor Dow is a bit out of focus in the picture, but you can tell that everyone is a lot more serious in this portrait.
I really like this picture as I can even better see where some of my father’s look comes from. You can really see his resemblance to his Grandfather. Especially his hair. His Grandfather and Great-Uncle are also sitting the same way that he does. You can also see the faces of each of them, although the faces in profile in the previous picture are also interesting.
You also get a nice glimpse into the hair and clothing styles of 100 years ago. I like Georgia’s hairstyle, her head looks a bit flat :-).
In the picture just above, I left the edges of the portrait intact. You can easily tell that the picture was taken in a portrait studio.

For the last picture, I cropped the picture so that it looks more like a family portrait.
This picture was most likely taken shortly after Lottie and Chub were married, so it was a nice way to welcome him into the family.
It is nice to have this look into the personal life of my ancestors.

I like how the man with the moustache is looking directly at the photographer in the first picture. It’s as if he’s saying, “Hey, we’re playing poker here, what do you want?”
There is a close up of him in the original post. There are definitely some interesting expressions in the pictures.
Steven, such a wonderful possession. Love photographs of my ancestors. They are priceless. My grandkids can’t tell some of the men from the women 🙂
Wow, those pictures are in such prestine condition, I’m so happy for you to have them. I was able to scan a bunch of old pictures my aunt had, but there’s no dates or names on them, so some are a mystery. I try and remember to write on the back of any pictures I have printed just for that reason. It’s fun to see the first picture since it shows their personalities a bit more, you know they weren’t just a serious bunch.
We have some interesting family pictures. You will hopefully see more of them I the future.

Steven, Fred and Harve Ramsey were sons of Adam Ramsey I believe. In your photos do you know which is which? I mean which one is Fred and which one is Harve?
Carel, I only have that they are Harve and Fred, but not which. I also looked for other pictures of them and don’t seem to have any. My Mom may have additional pictures of them. Fred is two years older than Harve and they are probably in their early teens here. To me the boy in the light colored suit looks older.
