A Virtual Hike Idea

As I continue my Virtual Hike I have been trying to figure out my future route across the country. I am virtually in Kansas with my last stop being at Hays, Kansas. See: Virtual Hike to Hays, Kansas

Cochran, Hays, Kansas, Tomb StoneSince the last stop had to do with Family History I thought perhaps I could follow the migration route of one of my ancestors as I head toward the East Coast.

I have been doing a lot of research lately on my Rowe family so it may be the family that I will choose to follow.

Since the family migrated from east to west and I am walking west to east I am going to give the migration path in reverse 🙂

Iowa County, Iowa, Jeremiah RoweMy 3rd Great Grandfather Jeremiah Rowe was living in Marengo, Iowa at the time of his death in 1895. He was in Iowa County, Iowa in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Federal Census records and 1885 and 1895 Iowa Census records.

Iowa County Iowa, Jeremiah Rowe, MigrationHere you can better see where Iowa County is in Iowa.

Carlisle, Lorain, Ohio, Jeremiah RoweThe 1850 Federal Census shows Jeremiah living in Carlisle Township, Lorain County, Ohio. His father William also lived there, but instead of continuing on to Iowa moved to Michigan where he was in 1860.

Rochester, New York, Jeremiah RoweIn the 1840 Federal Census Jeremiah was in Rochester, New York and his father was also in Monroe County, New York.

New Milford, Connecticut, Rowe Family, Murray FamilyIn the 1820 and 1830 Federal Census records Jeremiah would be living with his father as he was born in 1814. They were living in New Milford, Connecticut at the time of both the 1820 and 1830 Federal Census.

Migration, East to West, Rowe FamilyIn this map I simply chose Marengo, Iowa as a starting point and New Milford as the end and then moved the route to go through where Jeremiah lived in Ohio and New York.

Now that I look at the route, I know that this would not be the exact route that I would take as I would make some detours to visit other family sites.

I would also have to make it to Marengo to the starting point which is more than 500 miles from the last stop on the Virtual Hike. There is plenty of time for me to change my mind 🙂

Now back to wandering.

A Prayer for Wisdom

While out walking tonight I was listening to I Kings as I listen my way through the Bible yet again. As I listened to chapter 3 several images came to mind from my trips to Israel. I listen to the ESV, so the quotes below are from the same.

Gibeon, Nabi Samwil, High Place of GibeonHere at Nebi Samwil is perhaps where Solomon’s prayer for wisdom in I Kings 3 took place.

Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places. And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

Gibeonite Deception - Gibeon Israel - Joshua - Nebi Samwil - Conquest of Israel

At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.” And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.

Nebi Samwil, High Place of Gibeon, Samuel, Israel

Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.

Solomon, Heights of Gibeon, Nebi-Samwil, Gibeon

I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days. And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.”

Nabi Samwil, Jerusalem, Dome of the Rock

And Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.
