1819 Marriage Documents

Religion in Family History

This afternoon I found some interesting documents from the marriage of my 4th Great Grandparents Adam Sears and Susannah Kern.

Nicholas County, Kentucky, 1819 Marriage, Kern, SearsAdam and Susannah were married on October 26, 1819 in Nicholas County, Kentucky. Here you can see that Nicholas County is near Lexington, Kentucky.

Marriage Bond, Nicholas County Kentucky, Adam Sears, Susannah KernThe first document is a bond between Adam Sears and Adam Kern the father of Susannah. The bond is in the amount of 50 pounds current money of Kentucky. The bond was signed four days before the marriage.

Kentucky Marriage Permit, 1819, Nicholas County, Sears, KernNext is the marriage license which was also issued on October 22, 1819.

This is to license and permit any duly authorized minister of the Gospel to join together in the holy state of matrimony Adam Sears to wife Susanah Kern of this county agreeable to the rights and ceremonies recognized by law given under my hand as Clerk of the Court of the County aforesaid this 22nd day of October 1879.

Marriage Record, Nicholas County Kentucky, Adam Sears, Susannah KernThis may be a bit hard to see, but it is the marriage register showing that Adam Sears and Susannah Kern were married on October 26, 1819.

You may see that one column has the word “Same”. This is the column for who performed the ceremony.

Marriage Record, Nicholas County Kentucky, Peter HonThe minister who performed the marriage ceremony for Adam Sears and Susannah Kern was Peter Hon.

East Union Church, Kentucky, Peter Hon, Restoration MovementThe documents do not state where the ceremony took place, but most likely it was at East Union. Peter Hon did not become the minister of the East Union church until 1824, but it was his home community. By 1819 Peter Hon along with the Hostetler, Sears, Kern and other families had separated from the Dunkard or Brethren churches.

It also makes sense that Peter Hon would perform the ceremony as he was a step-cousin of Adam Sears.

Someday I would like to visit this area of Kentucky and see where my ancestors lived.

Shortly after their marriage Adam and Susannah moved to Harrison County, Indiana where they were in the 1820 census.

I plan to write more about Adam Sears in a future post, but I need to do more research.

Dickens Memories

This week I made a trip to Half-Price Books and found another book to add to my Penguin Popular Classics collection. I now have more than 70 titles in this imprint from the UK which is no longer in print. I do not see them very often as they were not sold in the US. However, they were popular purchases in airports and hotels when people would travel so they do end up in used book stores here.

Nicholas Nickleby, Charles Dickens, Memories, Junior High EnglishThe title that I found was Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens. This brought back some memories.

English Class, Plays, Speech ClassI remember sitting in Mrs. McQuade’s class and watching a production of Nicholas Nickleby. I think that it was in 8th grade English when we watched it.

Of course many other memories of classes with Mrs. McQuade along with speech competitions, plays and musicals came flooding back.

Martin Chuzzlewit, Charles Dickens, Penguin Popular ClassicsHere is another of the Dickens Penguin Popular Classics. I picked up Martin Chuzzlewit at the Half-Price Books flagship store in Dallas when I visited there.

I also have copies of Hard Times, Great Expectations, David Copperfield and A Tale of Two Cities.

Charles Dickens - Christmas Books - Oxford Illustrated - A Christmas Carol - The Cricket on the HearthI do have all of the works of Charles Dickens, including the complete set of The Oxford Illustrated Dickens. I even have the box for the set. I picked the set up at Steele’s Used Books in Kansas City years ago.

Dickens First Edition, The Life of Our Lord, Charles DickensAt the same time I picked up a little known work of Charles Dickens. This is a first edition of The Life of Our Lord which wasn’t published until 1934.

Now back to my memories.
