Dickens and Christmas

When I think of what to read at Christmas time I often think of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

Christmas Carol - Time Travel - Charles Dickens - TravelThis is one copy of the book that I have. It was printed in 1908 and is a bit worn from being read many times over the years.

When I think of A Christmas Carol I always remember a library program that I attended back in the mid 90’s in Kansas City. Gerald Dickens the great, great grandson of Charles Dickens presented part of A Christmas Carol at the local library. I was fortunate to meet him and shake his hand as I was good friends with several of the library staff. Always remember, be nice to your librarians 🙂

Mr. Dickens and his Carol, Samantha SilvaToday I finished read Mr. Dickens and His Carol by Samantha Silva while eating my lunch. The book is an interesting fictional account of the writing of A Christmas Carol. It really is interesting and in some ways retells the story while Dickens writes it. It is complete with a ghost, a bit of a Christmas miracle and Dickens disguising himself as Scrooge.

It is interesting that A Christmas Carol was written in a short time period and out of financial necessity for Dickens.

Roberta Paflin - Old Scrooge sat in his Countinghouse - A Christmas Carol - Charles DickensThe images of A Christmas Carol that stick with me are from the animated version from 1962 that is often shown at Christmas time. I always see Mr. Magoo as Ebeneezer Scrooge when I read the book.

Charles Dickens - Christmas Books - Oxford Illustrated - A Christmas Carol - The Cricket on the HearthDickens also wrote several other Christmas books and stories. They fill two volumes of The Oxford Illustrated Dickens.

Dickens Christmas Stories - Oxford Illustrated - Christmas Stories - Wilkie Collins - Household WordsYou can read more about his other stories in my post Dickens Christmas.

Grandpa Braman - A Dicken's Christmas? - Full White Beard - Top HatDickens and Christmas also make me think of my Grandpa. He looks a bit like he could have stepped out of a Dickens novel in this picture.

Will you read A Christmas Carol or watch one of the versions on TV this year?

A Christmas Party in Germany

While in Germany last week I got to go to a company Christmas party. However, I missed our company Holiday party here which was also last week.

Jena Germany, Volkshaus, Christmas PartyThe party was held in the Jena Volkshaus or People’s House. The large hall we were in is used for concerts and other events. It is also the home of the Jeaner Philharmonie orchestra. In this picture you see a small orchestra. This orchestra is composed of company employees. They had a great sound and played a lot of traditional holiday music.

The Jena Volkshaus was opened in 1903 and was built by the Carl Zeiss Foundation.

You can see that there is a lot of pink in the picture above. This is from the lights in the room. It was very difficult to get good pictures as they all had a pink hue to them.

German Party Food, Buffet, Christmas PartyWe had a really nice dinner buffet with good hearty food. I did not get a good picture of the appetizer/salad plate, but here we have some of the dinner items.

desserts, Christmas Party, GermanyHere are some of the desserts, they were all good and I contemplated going back for more 🙂

More wonderful than the food was a chance to hang out with my colleagues away from the office. I also wandered around and talked to other employees I have met through the 25 years I have worked for Zeiss. Some were very surprised to see me as they did not know I was visiting.

Jena Volkshaus, Jena Germany, Geometrical DesignsThe ceiling of the hall had some very interesting geometrical designs. I just had to try and get a good picture of them. Again, you can see that pink hue from the lights.

Jena Germany, Volkshaus, Zeiss, December NightI thought about digging into my archive and finding a good picture of the outside of the Volkshaus, but decided that this picture that I took better conveyed what it was like that night.

I took this picture just after leaving the party. It was a clear, cold evening.

Street Train, Tram, Jena, Germany, FelsenkellerI then consulted the transit app on my phone to find the best place to catch the tram back to the hotel. I had to make the choice between walking to a station that was close and waiting in the cold for half an hour or walking to one further away and having a shorter wait. I chose the second option and still had a long wait. However, the walk warmed me up just enough for the wait.

The party was nice and I am glad that I was able to be there. However, I did miss getting to go to the party at home.
