Labor Day Weekend

Today is the start of another Labor Day weekend, which is the last holiday of summer.

Today I have been thinking of the labors of some of my ancestors.

To read about the labors of my grandparents you can visit: Labor Day – Grandparents

This evening I will share the labors of some of the ancestors further back in my family tree.

Rome, Wisconsin, Jefferson, Postmaster, Orsamus BramanIn Ancestral Postmasters I wrote about two of my ancestors who were postmasters.

Absalom Leeper, Mount Pleasant Iowa, Preacher, Christian Church, Pioneer Preacher, Mad as a Hatter - Hat Maker - Trenton, Iowa, Scotch-Irish, IrishI have many ancestors who were preachers or ministers including Absalom Leeper who was one of the first Church of Christ ministers in Iowa. Absalom was also a hatter in his younger days.

TipTop Apartments - Ford Motor Factory - TipTop Factory - Omaha, Nebraska - Loft ApartmentsMy great grandfather may have worked in this building in Omaha where Ford built the Model T. Did he work with machinery? We don’t know. See: TipTop Ford

Saugus Iron Works - Saugus, Massachusetts - Boston - First Fire Engine - Joseph Jenckes - Colonial InventionMy 10th great grandfather Joseph Jenks worked at the Saugus Iron Works as a toolmaker.

The iron works at Saugus were founded by the Leonard family who then went on to found the Leonard Iron Works near Taunton, Massachusetts. I have just recently found out that my Braman ancestors may have worked at these iron works. I am still trying to figure out the records that I have found, but perhaps they were bound as apprentices to the Leonard Iron Works. I do know that there are many blacksmiths scattered throughout this branch of my family.

Silas Calvin Ramsey - 3rd Iowa Cavalry - Civil War - FarrierSilas Ramsey, one of the few Civil War ancestors that I know of served as a farrier for the 3rd Iowa Cavalry. He was also a blacksmith as a farrier uses some of the skills of a blacksmith in their care of horses feet, especially at a time when manufactured horse shoes would not have been readily available.

Silas Calvin Ramsey, Civil War, Blacksmith, Iowa Cavalry, Woodland Cemetery, GravestoneHere is the gravestone of Silas, which was recently placed over his grave after almost 120 years.

Building cars, tool makers and blacksmiths are in my genes.

I now understand a little more of why I am an engineer 🙂

In the BAR XVIII

It is time for another entry in my In the BAR post series where I share some of my own pictures or thoughts about a recent issue of Biblical Archaeology Review.

When I opened the latest issue a couple days ago several articles and pictures caught my eye.

Hezekiah's Tunnel - Archaeology - Biblical Archaeology Review - BAR - Under Jerusalem - Water SystemAn article about the Millo made me think of several pictures that I took from the area discussed.

Hezekiah’s Tunnel was discussed in the article as well as other parts of the water system of early Jerusalem. City of David excavations, Jerusalem, King David, ArchaeologyThe stepped stone structure on the left side of the picture above has often been referred to the Millo, but this may not be the Millo.

Pool of Siloam, Jerusalem, GospelsThey also referenced the Siloam pool in the article as possibly being related to the Millo. One of the main points of the article is that the word millo my be referring to filling with water instead of stone or soil. Could it be referring to what is know today as the Spring Tower?

Hagia Sofia - Church, Mosque, Museum, Istanbul, TurkeyAn article Constantinople: Christianity’s First Capital by Sarah K. Yeomans brought back memories of a trip to Istanbul.

The picture above was taken inside the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

Qumran, Essenes, Dead Sea, BAR, Biblical Archaeology Review, Dead Sea ScrollsThere was also an article about Qumran and some of the activities of the community there.

Excavation season is underway in Israel and I am following the different digs that are underway. Hopefully in the next issue they will share information from some of the sites that I have visited in the past.

Hopefully I will find something in the next BAR and will add another post to the series.
