A Memorable Earthquake Drill

Tonight I am thinking about an earthquake drill that I took part in ten years ago. Tomorrow is the 38th anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. On the morning of September 19 Mexico City was struck by an 8.1 magnitude earthquake.

The safety of my students is always important when I teach a class and I always include evacuation procedures in the welcome to my classes. However, ten years ago in Mexico City I took part in an earthquake drill that I will never forget. I wrote the post below while in Mexico City teaching a class. I have made a few changes in the text, but it is mainly what I wrote at that time.

This morning when I arrived at the office in Mexico City they let me know that my class would be disrupted by an earthquake drill. They told me that this is done each year on the anniversary of the big quake. This brought back memories of the event. I remembered the horrific pictures that I saw in the newspaper and in magazines. I did not see TV images as we did not have one while growing up.

A large portion of the city is built on a dry lake bed and the ground is highly susceptible to liquefaction. The epicenter was more than 200 miles away from the city, but the liquefaction caused by the shock-waves contributed to the massive amount of damage in the city. Some tall buildings were even turned upside down and most others sustained massive damage.

Because of what was learned in the 1985 quake, very strict building codes have been put in place and there have been very few skyscrapers built in Mexico City. You can tell by the picture above that it is a very horizontal city.

The picture was taken from the Torre Latinoamericana which is nearly 600 feet tall. The tower was built with stringent earthquake measures and survived the 1985 quake virtually unscathed.

Which meant, we had an evacuation drill this morning.

First they had an earthquake preparedness presentation. Which, I understood a lot of even though it was in Spanish. It helped that they had a PowerPoint presentation 🙂

Then there was the evacuation drill.

When we arrived at the meeting spot we were given additional instruction, including a demonstration on how to use a fire extinguisher.  You must remember to shoot the stream at the base of the flames.

However, the company emergency response team is also involved in the drill.

We returned to the classroom along a flooded sidewalk.

I wish that our evacuation drills back home were as informative as the one that we had today in Mexico City.

We basically just run for the exits when we have a drill and stand outside enjoying the sunshine until we are given the all clear.

Constitution Day 2023

Today is Constitution Day and there is barely a mention of it in the news today. This is interesting as so much is talked about in politics about how to interpret the Constitution.

About ten years ago I found an article, that was published on Constitution Day, in one of my Grandma’s Scrapbooks, so decided to share it with you today and comment on a few excerpts.

The article actually starts 169 years old today … so we can calculate that it was written in 1956. Below is the preamble of the constitution with the original spelling and capitalization.

We, the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

I am sure that many of you had the preamble memorized at one point in your life as it is a common exercise in History and Government classes.

These 52 words state in beautiful simplicity the purpose of the Constitution of the United States of America. It behooves us on this the 169th birthday of the signing of this timeless document to bow our heads in thanks to the God-given wisdom of our forefathers for the work which has made our nation the greatest in the history of Earth.

This is still true today, and we definitely need to give thanks for those that did sign our Constitution.

The article goes on to talk about the rights that were bestowed upon us by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I will share the last two paragraphs as the thoughts and warnings are still valid today.Constitution Day, Right to Vote, Constitution, Exercising Rights

With few exceptions we exercise all of the foregoing rights. There is one right bestowed upon us by our Constitution, however that many of us do not exercise. This right is the cornerstone of our great democracy. This is the right to vote.

We must remember that voting is an important right that was given to us by the Constitution. We need to make sure that we not only vote, but that we also educate ourselves on the choices that we make as voters.

If we are to protect our rights under this great Constitution we must be eternally vigilant. Our Government is only as safe as the integrity of those we elect to public office!

I really like the last paragraph of this article. This was a warning made 67 years ago that we need to make sure that we are still paying attention to. We must make sure that we look for men or women of integrity to lead us and make decisions for our nation.

We celebrate our Independence Day and talk bout the Spirit of ’76, but we need to make sure that we also remember the Constitution that has made our nation great.
