Remembering the Challenger Tragedy

The Challenger Shuttle tragedy happened 34 years ago today. At the time I was in college in Irving, Texas.

I can vividly remember going down to the student commons between class and seeing everyone gathered around the TV screen watching the events unfold. It was a sad day and one that I will always remember.

Challenger Shuttle Tragedy - Dallas Times Heral - Space Shuttle - Newspaper Clippings

When I was young I saved newspaper clippings and other items about the Space Program.

Included in that collection are clippings from the Challenger tragedy.

Since I was living in the DFW area the clippings were from the Dallas Times Herald.

The main headlines were:

Shuttle explosion kills crew

Seven die as Challenger disintegrates after launch

Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion - Dallas Times Herald - CBS News - Memories - Newspaper ClippingsThe main picture on the first page was provided by CBS News and had the following caption:

Space shuttle Challenger explodes in a ball of fire Tuesday, 71 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral

It was the first of many clippings that I saved about the Challenger tragedy.

I also saved many clippings about the investigations into the tragedy.

U. S. News and World Report - Challenger Tragedy - MemoriesMy Dad subscribed to U.S. News and World Report and he saved the issue that first covered the Challenger tragedy. I am having good memories as I type this of reading and discussing news with my Dad when I was in High School.

Challenger Tragedy - Reader's Digest - Memories My parents also subscribed to Reader’s Digest. My mom saved an article that appeared a few months later, and I added it to my collection.

I also get my interest in the Space Program from my Grandma. She also saved things about the Space Program and I have shared a few pieces from her scrapbooks in previous posts:

Moon Landing

Friendship 7

Sputnik

Even though I am remembering the sadness of the Challenger tragedy today, I am also having good memories of following the Space Program through the years.

Do you remember where you were that day?

Steven

Holocaust Memorials

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day and I have been thinking of some of the Holocaust memorials I have visited.

Take time to reflect and remember the events of the Holocaust during the day.

Yigal Tumarkin Holocaust Memorial Sculpture Rabin Square

I will start with this sculpture by Yigal Tumarkin that is in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, Israel. I visited this during my first trip to Israel. You can learn more about this sculpture by clicking on the following link: Rabin Square Sculpture

Holocaust Memorial - Berlin, Germany - Holocaust Remembrance Day - Yom HaShoahI have also visited the Berlin Holocaust Memorial. This picture is in my post Yom HaShoah, but there is also another picture of it in my post Holocaust Remembrance Day. The post also features pictures of the Jewish Museum in Berlin that was designed by David Libeskind.

Buchenwald Liberation - Buchenwald Concentration camp - Weimar, Germany - Holocaust - Eternal Time - April 11I also remembered two visits that I have made to the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar, Germany. One of the most sobering visits that I have made to a historical site. There are a few more pictures of Buchenwald in my post Buchenwald Liberation.

Buchenwald Concentration Camp - Weimar, Germany - Holocaust Remembrance Day - Yom HaShoahThe second time that I visited Buchenwald I was with a group of young students which included the daughter of one of my German co-workers. At the end of the visit we each placed a rose on the Living Memorial. The memorial is kept at body temperature year round.

Buchenwald Liberation - April 11, 1945 - Concentration Camp - Security Fence - HolocaustMemories of these places helped me remember this sad time in our history.
