Veterans Day IX

Today was Veterans Day here in the US. Today was a day to pause and remember the many Veterans who have served our country, and to give them our thanks.

When I think of Veterans Day, I first think of three men.

The first two are my Dad’s brothers, Howard and Chester.Veterans Day 2012 - Howard and Chester Braman - VeteransHoward and Chester both served our country in the Army. Howard served in Korea, Vietnam and Germany and Chester in Germany. I am not sure, but they may have served in other countries as well. I  do know that they remained active in the military for almost their entire adult lives. Chester for many years was in charge of local National Guard Armories in Southwest Kansas and Howard worked with the DAV in Iowa and was also in the National Guard and Reserves. To me, they embody the concept of Veteran. Unfortunately, I cannot give them a call and thank them today as they have both passed away since the picture above was taken in 2008. I however am thankful for their service.

The other Veteran that I first think of is my Great Uncle Fred.Veterans Day 2012 - Great Uncle Fred - Freedom TrainMy Great Uncle Fred Fred Hotchkiss enlisted in 1948 at the age of 17 just after the end of WWII. He was assigned to the Freedom Train and was able to see all 48 states as the train toured the country displaying the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. He then saw the world as he served as an Army nurse for 33 years serving in Germany, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. My Great Uncle Fred has also now passed on, but he lives in our memories.

I have other relatives that have served, including cousins and other great-uncles, but these are the three that I think of first. I give thanks to all of them as they have all played important roles in helping keep our country free and secure.

I also have many friends, classmates and work colleagues who have served and they all have my thanks today for their service.

Another Season of Oak Island

Every year as the current season of The Curse of Oak Island comes to a close there is always talk about whether there will be another season. Will they keep hunting for the answers to the mystery and for lost treasure? Will there be a season 8?

Curse of Oak Island, History Channel, Did they find anything?

Yes, there is another season. Tonight is the premier of Season 8 of The Curse of Oak Island  and this year there is the added drama of whether they would be able to continue the search with all the restrictions from COVID-19.

Oak Island, treasure, Randal SullivanThe episode tonight is titled Remote Control, and from trailers it looks like Rick and Marty will be overseeing activities on Oak Island from home.

This makes me think of the difficulties I have in teaching remotely and how it will translate to what they are doing. It will definitely not be easy.

Curse of Oak Island, Mahone Bay, Nova ScotiaIt will be interesting to see where they will be digging or exploring this year as they begin a new season.

Will they undertake one of the big projects they proposed as the end of last season?

I don’t see them doing the biggest project they talked about because of what is going on this year, but perhaps they will get things set up for a Season 9.

Oak Island, Money Pit, National Geographic, Curse of Oak IslandThe operations at the site will have already been completed, so perhaps they will give hints of what is to come later in the season.

Tonight is a two hour episode and I hope that they don’t spend most of the time recapping the last season. Please give us a good preview of what is to come.

How many episodes will there be this year? I don’t expect that there will be as many as last year. Should we already start discussing whether there will be a Season 9 of The Curse of Oak Island?

What will they find this year?
