Pearl Harbor Day Anniversary Memory

Each year as Pearl Harbor Day approaches I start thinking of when my parents got married in a little church in Frytown, Iowa.

Frytown Church of Christ - Frytown, Iowa - 150 years - Restoration MovementI always wonder if I am remembering that Pearl Harbor Day is coming up, or that their anniversary is near. This year they are celebrating their 57th.

Pearl Harbor Day, Hawaii, Attack, MemoriesOf course today is the anniversary of that tragic day in Hawaii. On the news tonight they talked about how only two survivors of the USS Arizona are still living. One of them lives in Grass Valley which is near Sacramento. I also saw an article in the newspaper and also posts on Facebook about Pearl Harbor today.

I usually do see something in the news, but one year I was in Tokyo and didn’t get a reminder. That was before Facebook, and there was no mention in the local news that day.

I talked to my parents yesterday and wished them a happy anniversary. We talked about how I started my current job the day before their 30th, which means that my 27th work anniversary was yesterday.

I am now thinking about Niagara Falls, as that is where they went on their honeymoon. They drove through snow as they headed out on their first adventure as newlyweds.

Best Decorations in the Neighborhood

While out walking around the park yesterday I spotted activity at one of the houses across the street.

best neighborhood christmas decorations, autumnI had been wondering if there would be decorations at this house this year as they usually put up a nice display. However, they have skipped a few years. With so many more people decorating this year I figured that their decorations would be back up.

christmas decorations, christmas, decorations, best of showI knew that I would have to walk by and check them out once they were done, so waited to walk until after dark tonight. Of course, I also had to wait for the Chiefs to beat the Broncos to set out on my walk.

christmas decorations, christmas, decorations, best of showThe display is very colorful. In this picture your can see that there is room for a few more things, and perhaps they will fill it up. I did notice that a few items they had in the past have not been set out. Perhaps they will put them out later.

christmas decorations, christmas, decorations, best of showIt definitely looks nice. I will enjoy seeing the lights if I walk in the evening. With tensions as high as they are with the shelter in place I may wait to walk until after dark when fewer people are out and about.

There are a lot more people who have decorated this year. I may even try and find that string of white lights I have and put them out :-).

Update: This display won the city decorating contest. They also made some some additions to the display as I thought they would.
