Oak Island – Old Leather

Season 9 of The Curse of Oak Island is continues to be exciting.

In the episode tonight they showed more items removed from the second large can using the hammer grab tool and the start of the sinking of the third can.

Curse of Oak Island, History Channel, Did they find anything? The most interesting find shown this week was not from one of the cans, but from old spoils. The find was a large piece of leather.

The leather was taken to an expert to be examined and some interesting information was given.

The leather turned out to be the sole of a boot. The process used to tan the leather dates back to 1235, which was the teaser date in the preview from last week.

However, the leather probably comes from much later, perhaps from the 1500s which could mean it was from the depositor time frame.

Curse of Oak Island, Mahone Bay, Nova ScotiaThe metal detecting didn’t help much this week as mainly they just found mud, rocks and wood pieces.

Update on the Siloam Inscription

This evening I found out that the return of the Siloam Inscription to Israel is not going to happen.

During the past 25 years there have been multiple attempts to have this important artifact returned to Israel. With Turkey pushing to have important items repatriated to them, it is disappointing that they are not following through with the news from last week.

Perhaps this is just a delay and it will happen at a later date.

See below for what I wrote last week

This morning when I woke up and checked my Facebook feed I found an interesting news story.

The Siloam inscription is being returned to Israel.

The Siloam inscription was found in Hezekiah’s Tunnel in 1880 by Jacob Eliahu who was a student of Conrad Schick. Later Jacob was adopted by Horatio Spafford.

Hezekiah's Tunnel, Water Tunnel, Jerusalem, City of DavidI have walked through Hezekiah’s Tunnel several times when I have been in Jerusalem.

The inscription gives details of the construction of the tunnel in Paleo Hebrew script.

The inscription was sent to the museum in Istanbul as Jerusalem was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time it was found.

There is currently a movement to repatriate historic artifacts to countries where they were found, and I am sure that we will see more headlines like this in the future.

There are two other inscriptions that Israel would like to have repatriated. The Gezer calender and the Temple Warning inscription are also in the museum in Istanbul.
