Oak Island – The Hidden Well

Season 10 of The Curse of Oak Island continues to show new discoveries and theories.

This week on Oak Island they started by taking some blocks of wood from the Garden Shaft for testing.

They also talked about the earlier searches by Fred Nolan and a well was brought up that had been abandoned in the past. They also talked about what was called the quadrilateral.

They decided to look at at the hidden well that is near the swamp in lot 11.

Curse of Oak Island, History Channel, Did they find anything?Of course, one thing to remember is that the dig season is already over. They have taken the time to determine how to present things each week to build suspense and keep viewers tuned in.

oak Island, Money Pit, Mahone BayThey started to dig out what they thought was the well while metal detecting the material that was removed. They found a hand forged rose-head spike and also an old hook. The hook was later found to be part of a block and tackle set that could’ve been used in maritime activities like unloading a boat. The hook could’ve been from the late 17th century which would have been prior to the finding of the money pit.

However, they did not find evidence of a well in this first spot.

Later they tried another place that was close by and in the new spot they found some pottery. The well had been reported to have been partly filled with broken pottery so it looked to be the right place. They also found a piece of what could be part of an old pick.

The excavation started to fill in with water so they brought in a hydro-vac truck so that they could drain out the water to better see what they had found. They did find a rounded structure that was hollow in the middle which of course pointed to it being a well.

The well has a similar construct to the other old well that they investigated earlier so they believe that they may be related to each other. They wanted to continue excavating the well further, but they must get permits to dig deeper.

The tree expert gave a report on the tree cores that were taken. The age of the tree is 240 years or more, so could have been there at the time the Money Pit was found.

They continued taking apart the wall and found a layer of flat stones near the bottom. They found some charcoal at the bottom of the wall and this time they handled it carefully so they should get some good dates from it and get a better idea of how old the wall is.

They started looking at the cross section and it was mentioned that the base of the wall was heavily constructed, and may have supported something more substantial than just a wall.

oak island, curse of oak lsland, satellite, money pitSmall pieces of the wood samples, that were taken from the Garden Shaft, were run through the XRF. They found that they also contained traces of gold. The percentage of trace gold increased with the depth of the shaft.

In the preview of the next episode they showed them starting to excavate the quadrilateral.  They mentioned a layer of clay that should not have been where it was found, but not the exact location. Perhaps it was underneath the quadrilateral. They showed the finding of an object and later something, possibly the object, was identified as being Portuguese from perhaps the 15th or the 16th century.

It looks like there will not be a new episodes next week. The next episode will be A Quadrilateral Move and air two weeks from now.

This episode was titled A Well of Secrets, but I am not sure that they really showed what the secrets were that were found. Perhaps they title meant that they found more secrets to explore once they are able to excavate further.

What will they find under the quadrilateral. The description of the episode hints at something special.

Heavy Rain

Today I all of a sudden heard very loud sounds of rain falling on the roof. It was the loudest I have heard the rain in the many years I have lived here.

heavy rain, thunderstorm, flooding, rain stormI looked out the front door and rain was coming down hard and the wind was also driving it sideways at times.

heavy rain, thunderstorm, flooding, rain stormIt was raining so hard that the street started to flood as the water was not able to flow away through the sewers fast enough.

heavy rain, thunderstorm, flooding, rain stormI had gone back inside when the sound changed and I heard hail hitting the windows of the house. Luckily it was not too big, but you can see here some of the pea sized hail.

heavy rain, thunderstorm, flooding, rain stormWater was starting to collect between my house and the next door neighbor as it was not able to drain to the street fast enough.

heavy rain, thunderstorm, flooding, rain stormOn the other side of the house my walkway flooded and it took quite some time to drain.

It is not often we have thunderstorms here in California, but there have been a lot of them this year.

In my town we also do not get as much rain as they say that we are in a rain shadow. We live just east of a line of hills that will usually moderate the rain storms. However, in this case the thunderstorm developed in the area between the hills and the town.

There is a lot of major flooding here in California. I am glad that I am not in a low lying area. It was a bit flooded for a short time, but now all the standing water is gone.
