Pride and Prejudice – 211 Years

Today marked the 211th anniversary of the publishing of Pride and Prejudice by  Jane Austen. I was reminded of this anniversary by a friend in Canada and updated a post tonight that I had originally written in 2017.Jane Austen Suite, Audleys Wood Hotel, Jane Austen, Austen Country, BasingstokeBack in January 2017  I stayed in Jane Austen Country while visiting some customers in England. The hotel I stayed at in Basingstoke had a Jane Austen suite. I did not stay in the suite, but I did walk past the door and take this picture 🙂

Penguin Classics, Jane Austen, 200th anniversary of death, novelsTonight I am remembering the novels that Jane Austen wrote. Here is a picture of her books from my Penguin Popular Classics collection. I am missing one of them. I have not yet found Persuasion in my hunt for volumes in this series.

I would say that Pride and Prejudice is my favorite of Jane Austen’s novels. This is due partly to the different movies that are based on the book.

Northanger Abbey is also a great read, especially if you have read The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe. This brings a greater understanding to the story.

I also liked Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion and Mansfield Park. It is really sad that Jane died at 41 as I am sure she would have written more great books. She did have several unfinished works that have been published so we can at least read a bit more than her six core books.

Steventon Church, Jane Austen, Hampshire, RectorHere is a picture that I took of the Steventon church where Jane’s father served as a rector and where she would have worshiped for a good portion of her life. Her brother also served as a rector there and she would often visit him after she had moved away.

Jane Austen, Museum, Chawton, HampshireNear the end of her life Jane lived in this house in Chawton which is to the east of Basingstoke. Steventon is just a little to the southwest of Basingstoke.

I am still looking to find Persuasion so that I will at least have all the Austen’s for my Penguin Popular Classics collection. I need to visit more used book stores.

Virtual Hike to Cannelton, Indiana

The next destination on my Virtual Hike was Cannelton, Indiana.

Cannelton is located in Perry County along the Ohio River.

Cannelton Indiana, Perry County Indiana, Virtual Hike, Bolin Family, Manly FamilyThe previous destination on my virtual hike was Hardinsburg, Kentucky.

You may notice the bicycle icon on the time and mileage instead of the walker. This is because the route would not go across the bridge to Cannelton when choosing the walking option in Google Maps. However, I determined it was OK to break the rules of my Virtual Hike in this case. See: Virtual Hike – Breaking the Rules?

Cannelton Indiana, Perry County Indiana, Virtual Hike, Bolin Family, Manly FamilyMost of the route was along narrow two lane roads through Kentucky.

Cannelton Indiana, Perry County Indiana, Virtual Hike, Bolin Family, Manly FamilyThe route passed several cemeteries, which would have probably been walked through if I was hiking in person.

Cannelton Indiana, Perry County Indiana, Virtual Hike, Bolin Family, Manly FamilyThe route finally made it to the bridge across the Ohio River. This is where I broke the rules, as there was no pedestrian access to the bridge. However, I could have ridden a bike across it.

Cannelton Indiana, Perry County Indiana, Virtual Hike, Bolin Family, Manly FamilyThe destination was Cannelton, and here you can see the post office in the small town.

Cannelton is in Perry County where the family of Abraham Lincoln and my 4th Great Grandfather Thomas Bolin moved in the mid 1810’s. Not together, but near the same time. The Lincoln’s moved a bit further west to what soon became Spencer County, but at the time it was still Perry County. See: They Lived Near: Abraham Lincoln

While in Perry County my 3rd Great Grandfather Thomas Bolin married Polly Manly in 1830. They moved to Iowa by 1850 and lived in Iowa County near Millersburg. This is on my maternal side of the family.

Thomas Bolin Sr. stayed in Perry County and died at Cannelton. I have been researching the Bolin family for a very long time. The history of the family is muddled, but there is likely a connection to the Thomas Jefferson family.

The Manly family moved on to Alabama and I have a whole family of distant cousins near Limestone, Alabama who I have never contacted, and possibly don’t know about our branch of the family.

Now that I am in Indiana I will virtually stop at several more places with family connections.
