Jury Duty Again

Earlier this month I receive a jury summons. This made me think back to the last time I received one. It has not been since 2020 and that one was postponed and then cancelled. I am attaching what I wrote back then.

The summons is for this week, but I do not have to go to the courthouse tomorrow as I am in one of the higher number groups. I will have to check each evening this week to see if I need to go in the next day. I would like to see the new courthouse, but would be just as happy if I don’t have to go in at all this week 🙂

It was interesting to go back and read what I wrote during the early days of the pandemic.

No Jury Duty – 4/3/2020

Back in February I received a jury summons for the court in Stockton, which is the county seat of San Joaquin County.

The date for the summons was while I was to be in Australia, so I asked for a postponement of my service. The new date given to me was for April 6 when I was to be back home.

Of course a lot has happened since that initial jury summons.

The new courthouse in on the right and the old courthouse is to the left. I had heard that the jury room was on one of the upper floors of the building and had great views of the city. The jury room in the old courthouse was in the basement.

Over the past couple weeks I have been watching to see if jury service for next week was cancelled and finally today the news came that it was.stockton court house, jury duty, stockton california, trial, covid 19I had also been looking forward to taking pictures of the new courthouse, but since I will not be going to Stockton I decided to take a virtual walk with Google Maps and snag some pictures out of the street views.

Instead next week I will be again working from home as I shelter in place. I already have several meetings scheduled for Monday as we use this time to get caught up on documentation and presentations. It is also busy as there is a lot of administrative work for on-line learning which is all of a sudden getting utilized more.

Keep safe out there,

Steven

Virtual Hike to Scioto Township, Ohio

The next destination on my Virtual Hike was Scioto Township, Ohio.

Scioto Township, Delaware County, Ohio, Licking County, Newark OH, Virtual Hike, Christian BurgeThe previous destination on my virtual hike was Zanesville, Ohio

You can see here that Scioto Township is just north of Columbus.

This courthouse was not built until the late 1800’s. However, in 1812 there was an older log courthouse at the same place and it was here that my 5th Great Grandfather Christian Burge was granted a license to solemnize marriages. He had credentials from the Christian Church as a minister.

Here is a clip of the Scioto Township Park and Nature area. I don’t know exactly where my family lived here, so this is just representative of the rural area there.

It was here in Scioto Township that Christian Burge passed away in 1834.

It was mentioned in the Ohio Gazette that

died at his home in Scioto township, Delaware county, the Rev. Christian Burge, Minister of the Gospel, in the 69th year of his age. The deceased was a soldier of the Revolution, and emigrated many years since from Greene county in Pennsylvania to Licking county, Ohio, where he resided until within two years past.

I have a Bible that belonged to his son-in-law Jonathan Cochran, and he is mentioned as the father of Susannah.

My next few stops will have family connections. I have been working on the route so that I can include as many family locations as possible along the way. Of course, I am also finding new research opportunities as I go and am learning more about migration routes as the frontier pressed further west.
