Dinner at the Carnivore

Saturday Evening I ate at a unique restaurant. The name of the restaurant is Carnivore and it is definitely meat centered.

The Carnivore is just outside of Johannesburg in Muldersdrift. It is on the grounds of the Misty Hills Country hotel.

The Carnivore is an all you can eat restaurant and was inspired by the Brazilian churrascaria restaurants. In a churrascaria the meat is roasted in a BBQ style with either wood or charcoal. In South Africa this style is known as braai.

The food was served in the rodizio style. The meat was roasted on skewers that were later carried around by the waiters to each table and served. For larger pieces of meat pieces are carved off of the skewers at the table. For smaller pieces like sausages, they may simply just slide them off of the skewers.

Here my colleague Dantes is being served some chicken. The chicken was really good, it was well cooked, but still moist and had a wonderful smoky flavor from the BBQ.

A wide range of meats were served during the dinner. In the picture above I have some strips of zebra meat. The zebra was really good. Other meats included beef, chicken, crocodile, eland, kudu and pork. There were also several types of meat balls and sausage.

All of the meat was really good. We didn’t just eat meat, there was also a nice soup and salad to start as well as several sides that were served during the dinner.

However, the meat was the star of the meal.

The decor of the restaurant was also really nice. They had many hunting scenes as well as images from African history. I may share more pictures from the restaurant in the future.

Eating at the Carnivore was definitely a great experience. The food was great and I was able to check a few foods off of my bucket list.

If you are in Johannesburg, this is a must visit if you are a carnivore 🙂

Some South African Animals

On Saturday afternoon one of my colleagues took me on a little trip to help keep me awake. We decided to visit the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve near Johannesburg. This evening I will share some of my pictures from the drive through the reserve.Rhino and Lion, Nature Reserve, Animals, South Africa

Here is the sign at the entrance of the park. I was looking forward to seeing the animals as we made our entrance.

Zebras, Ostrich, Animal Park, South Africa

Some of the first animals we saw were Zebras and Ostriches.

The pictures were obviously all taken from the car and unfortunately most were taken from a bit of a distance at maximum zoom. Hopefully you will get a feel for my trip though.

South Africa, Eland, Largest Antelope

One of the animals that I really wanted to see was the Eland and here we several of them surrounded by more Ostriches.

The Eland is one of the largest of the antelope family.

Lion Camp, Lion preserve, South Africa

We were soon at the Lion and Predator Camp. I like the sign here that reminds drivers to remove all loose items from the outside of their vehicles.

White Lions, South Africa, Lion Park

I was really looking forward to seeing the White Lions. I had seen some of these before in the Toronto Zoo. These lions are not albino, but rather have a recessive color gene. For more information about them see my post White Lions or White Lions II.

Cheetah, South Africa, Nature Preserve

We almost drove right by this Cheetah that was resting by the road. They have such great camouflage.  We made sure that the window of the car was not too far down, just in case.

Rhinos, south Africa, White Rhinoceros

Here we see several White Rhinoceros along with a herd of Wildebeest.

I plan on writing some additional posts about some of the animals along with more details.

I hope you enjoyed this little overview.
