Driving in Iowa Snow

Last month I was in Iowa and we drove through areas that had snow the previous day. We did not drive through falling snow, but it made me think of a post that I wrote back in 2013 as we were driving between fields full of snow.

Many of my friends back in the Midwest are gearing up for winter driving.

Early Winter Driving – January 3, 2013

Time for another classic Frank Andrea Miller cartoon. This one is from 1961.

Frank Andrea Miller was an editorial cartoonist for the Des Moines Register from 1953 until his death in 1983. He won a Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning a few years after he drew this one.

Frank Andrea Miller Cartoon - Des Moines Register - Winter Driving - Car Wreck in snow

BACK WHEN THINGS FIRST STARTED GETTING COMPLICATED

Can you imagine when cars first started driving in snow. If you have ever seen the tires on early cars you would wonder how they could drive on anything other than a good road. But, we know that the roads were awful in those days.

I really like this cartoon. The adults are all making negative comments about the situation while the little boy has a great idea and is thinking about the future.

I can only imagine trying to drive in snow where I live. It would be chaos with all the people who have never driven in snow. Growing up in areas where it did snow, I at least have some winter driving skills. The last time I drove in snow it was through a Christmas Day blizzard back in Missouri. I am glad that I did not end up like this poor driver.

I am sure that some of you who read this will remember those early winter driving times. I am glad that with our technology today that it is much safer. Just think of the advances in tires and mechanical systems of our cars that have been made since this time.

To see another cartoon by Frank Andrea Miller visit my earlier post titled Winter Cuttings.
