Holocaust Remembrance Day

Yom HaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day began a few hours ago at sundown. Since this is a Jewish holiday it does not have a set date on our modern calendar. Yom HaShoah is on the 27th of Nissan, but since this year it would be adjacent to the Sabbath, it is on the 28th of Nissan.

Here are several pictures that help me remember the Holocaust.

Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas or Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe - Berlin Holocaust Memorial - Yom HaShoaYou can read more about the memorial shown in this picture in my post from last year titled: Yom HaShoah

The Berlin Holocaust Memorial was an interesting place to visit.

Jewish Museum Berlin - Daniel Libeskind - Yom HaShoah - ArchitectureWhile in Berlin I also visited the site of the Jewish Museum. Unfortunately the museum was closed when I was there, but I was able to walk around the building and take some pictures.

The Jewish Museum was designed by Daniel Libeskind, and was his first major work. Since that time he has designed several important museums as well as other structures. He is also responsible for the master plan for rebuilding of the World Trade Center in New York City.

Garden of Exile - Jewish Museum - Berlin, Germany - Holocaust - 49 pillars - 1948Here is the Garden of Exile. This sculpture has 49 planters in a 7×7 grid. Each of the planters have a willow oak growing in them. The outer 48 planters are filled with dirt from Berlin and stand for 1948 and the creation of modern Israel. The center planter is filled with dirt from Jerusalem.

Jewish Museum - Daniel Libeskind - Fall Day - Berlin - Holocaust Remembrance Day

My visit to Berlin was in the fall, and it was peaceful to walk down the tree lined walk in front of the Jewish Museum.

Buchenwald Liberation - April 11, 1945 - Concentration Camp - Security Fence - HolocaustThe tree lined walk also reminded me of this picture that I took during a visit to Buchenwald.

It is strange how history can touch us. My father a WW2 vet helped liberate two concentration camps. On one he was the one who open the gates. He carried a camera with him. Once at age 12 I found these pictures. When I asked him about them he told me of his experience. One of the very few times he would talk of the war. The pictures were never seen or found again.
