I stopped by Wal-Mart earlier today to pick up some Zingers and was surprised at the variety of Hostess snack cakes that are now available.

Almost all of the former Hostess snack cakes are now available again and also a few additions that I haven’t seen before.

Twinkies, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs, Zingers, CupCakes and donettes are all available and also in some new flavors.

The one that really caught my eye though was Banana Twinkies. A quick Google found that they had been available in the past, and that Banana was even the original flavor of Twinkies.

I also found that they were available exclusively at Wal-Mart.

They look the same as a normal Twinkie, but taste so much different. I really liked the balance between the Banana filling and the cake. I think that it is a better balance than in a normal Twinkie. Maybe it is just because Banana is a bold flavor and doesn’t get as lost in the taste of the cake.

I had heard that Hostess was working on some new flavors or variations of the Twinkie and thought that this might be one of them. I was surprised that Banana was available in the past.

The purpose of my trip to Wal-Mart was to pick up a package of Zingers. I have been watching for them where I normally shop, but they have not made an appearance yet. I am beginning to wonder if they are also a Wal-Mart exclusive.

In my previous post about Zingers, I had mentioned that the frosting was not consistent between the individual cakes. Since then I have found that they have improved and they seem to be more like the original, except that they are smaller.

Since I am thinking about former Hostess products, I also checked to see if there were any recent news reports about Flowers Foods and Home Pride Bread. I didn’t find anything new, but will continue to check every once and awhile.

I really liked the Banana Twinkie, but I still think that Zingers is my favorite of the Hostess snack cakes.
