Signs in Israel

When I travel I always look for interesting signs. Sometimes they are funny, sometimes they are confusing and sometimes they are just of something that I like.

A short post tonight as I am preparing to have my wisdom teeth out tomorrow morning.

Here is the first sign:Do not climb on the Antiquities Caesarea Maritima

I had to chuckle when I saw this sign. Were they talking about Grandparents, and to make sure that the children did not climb on them? 🙂

Luckily, they have the punctuation in the right spot. How would it read if it said “DO NOT CLIMB ON THE ANTIQUITIES PARENTS! – WATCH YOUR CHILDREN!

Next we have:Arrow on Rock Pointing into the groundI am not sure where this arrow is pointing. I think that the rock has been moved from where it originally was. In any case, I took a picture of it as maybe it was pointing to something phenomenal. Maybe more research is needed.

OK, next picture please:St. Peter's Mother in Laws House - CapernaumSomeone had a little fun with this sign in Capernaum. Was it really Peter’s Mother in Law’s house?    We should look in the gospels and see what they say.

And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf.(Luke 4:38 ESV)

Since Simon is another name for Peter, we find that it is his house. Of course, there is no certainty that this was his house. But, if it was not here, it was here. Sorry, to get the last statement you may need to see the gestures I am making. Those of you on the tour will understand :-).

Next we go to Bet She’an:Down the Centuries in Bet-She'anA certain word seems to be missing from this caption. Not sure how you can down the centuries. Is this a new type of eating game? How many century eggs can you down in five minutes? Is it a challenge to try something new? It probably should read “Down through the Centuries”. Click on this link to century eggs on wikipedia and you will understand a bit more my warped sense of humor.

And finally for all my coffee loving friends out there:Stars and Bucks Cafe in BethlehemHere is Bethlehem’s answer to Starbucks. I wonder if they have had any trouble with the Starbucks lawyers? I did find that there are no Starbucks in Israel. The closest ones are in Amman, Jordan.

I hope you enjoyed this assortment of signs. Which one is your favorite?

Steven

  1. The signs are humorous. Stars and Bucks: that establishment is in Bethlehem which is under the Palestinian Authority.

  2. Love the Stars & Bucks Cafe! And the arrow pointing under the rock. I would have been tempted to flip over that rock – are there scorpions in Israel?

i like the arrow rock. that sounds like a good thing to do on your next trip … take an arrow rock with you and do a photographic series (people holding, etc)

Their written language looks like it would be hard to learn…my penmanshiip is a bit of nasty business at the best of times. I had to read the Stars & Bucks sign twice to get it…very convincing. Oh dear, I have a bad feeling about that red arrow (pointing down). Hey, as long as they make a ‘Tall Skinny 1 pump’ they’re golden in my books.

Interesting topic!! I’m still wondering how you climb on the antiquities 🙂 Or what it even is …
